Teeth, Oil, and Routines

Happy Saturday, friend!

We’re back again with another edition of Productivity + Habits + Fun

😃 Fun Fact of the Week

Human teeth are the only part of the bod that can’t heal themselves.

Teeth aren’t made of live tissue. They’re coated in enamel, and enamel cannot regenerate.

🐦 Tweet of the Week

“Slow and steady wins the race.”

Routines

What is the difference between a habit and a routine?

Habits are simple things like putting on your seatbelt when you get in the car or brushing your teeth before bed.

Routines are a series of habits. Each morning, my routine to get ready is a series of habits: brush teeth, shave, shower, get dressed, collect my things, leave the house.

Imagine how powerful it can be to stack certain habits.

You could create a bedtime routine that makes falling asleep and staying asleep all but guaranteed.

You could create a Sunday meal-prep routine to make sure you can keep your health goals through the coming week.

By maintaining your routines, you help yourself stay on your trajectory to the future - be sure it’s a trajectory you want to be on!

🛢️ How Big Is The Oil Market?

I’m honestly shocked!

😌 Decision-making Idea

In-Group Favoritism: The bias to favor someone you have an affiliation with over someone you aren’t affiliated with.

Example: If you are a sports fan, it is very likely you will have a favorable bias toward a complete stranger who also is a fan of your same team.

This is a really great way to bridge the gap between yourself and someone else when you can find a similar interest.

The potential downside may be a reaction to dislike someone because they like a different team or work for another company in your field.

But this is actually a great opportunity to flip this negative bias on its head. Address the elephant in the room with a joke and then see what you DO have in common with this person.

🧠 Quote of the Week

The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become.

James Clear

What I think:

I’ve seen some pretty good evidence out there for identity-based habit forming.

My mother used to smoke cigarettes, and she identified as a smoker.

Eventually, she was able to stop the habit for good.

One of the things she did was to reidentify herself as a non-smoker.

The transition was difficult, but today her habit and her identity match perfectly.

What about you? Do you have any experience with changing your self-identity to reach a goal?

Thank you so much for spending some of you precious time with me. 🙂

I’m always looking to improve, so hit “reply” and let me know what you think!

Have an awesome week.

Sincerely,

Steven Sanders
